David Williams, a middle-aged man struggling with alcoholism, can barely get by with his work as a mechanic. When his ex-wife Katherine learns that their eldest, Junior, has been physically abused by her boyfriend, she decides to take the children to live with their father. David learns social services wants to talk to him and he decides to go into hiding with the children, fearing they will be taken. While on the run, his children constantly ask David to go to the beach and he reluctantly makes them a promise with a trip to their “happy place”.
Not wanting to turn his kids over to the foster care system, David bounces from family member to family member, with the inevitable lurking on his heels. Junior, who looks up to his father, has to grow up early, challenge his father’s demons, and face his fears of being taken away, while trying to get his family to their happy place, the beach. Can he do it?
